Born in 1993, D.O (Real name: Do Kyungsoo) is a boy who likes to sing. He won a singing competition during high school, was cast thereafter and debuted as an EXO-K member after training for two years. To enter SM Entertainment, he only sang ballads such as Na Yoon Kwon’s ‘Anticipation’ or Brown Eyed Soul’s ‘My Story’ but listening to various songs made him want to dance.

Kai

This is Kai (Real name: Kim Jongin) who was born in January 1994 and firmly believes he can teleport. He started learning jazz dance and ballet in grade 2 and after watching <The Nutcracker> in grade 4 he planned to major in ballet. His turning point was ‘Shinhwa’. Kai decided to become a singer after watching his Shinhwa seniors dance and auditioned for the first time in grade 6 to finally get accepted during his second year of middle school.

“I think the base of all dances can be found in ballet and jazz dance so I recommended [these two dances] to the other members”. Kai added “When I first entered the company, I learned popping and locking but it was really awkward during the first two months” and “Fortunately, I found my balance after practicing”. When asked to pick who were the members with the most talent in dance, Kai chosed Sehun, Baekhyun and D.O. 

Sehun

Sehun (Real name: Oh Sehun) was born in April 1994 and is EXO-K’s maknae. Cast in the streets during grade 6, he went through auditions four times in two years and became an SM Entertainment trainee during his second year of middle school. The very shy Sehun who always covers his face started to get more into dance after hearing his dance trainers’ say “You are talented. Try doing it well”.

“Even now, I am still surprised to see myself on TV” Sehun revealed. When asked about what changed after his debut, he replied “I look into the mirror a lot”. He added that he would look into the mirror before going on stage and before meeting his fans. Sehun then finally concluded “I am also more careful when it comes to my behavior”.

Suho

Suho (Real name: Kim Junmyeon) was born in 1991, he’s majoring in acting at Korea National University Of Arts, he dreamt of being a singer since elementary school. He planned to chase his dream for real when he was to enter university but he got through SM Entertainment’s audition at 16 years old and started to train then. He’s also the member with the longest training period in EXO-K.

Suho who overcame silently these long 7 years said “I was thinking that my chance was eventually going to come someday so I gave my best and prepared myself” and “The time I waited wasn’t hard”. With his positive personality, he strived to not lose confidence. Suho explained “As much as I was striving, I was second to none” and “I’m of the style to work hard, even for small things”.

Baekhyun

Baekhyun (Real name: Byun Baekhyun) was born in 1992, he started to dream of becoming a singer since 6th year of elementary school, while looking at Rain. During high school (Jungwon high school), as he was in the school’s band, he participated in a rock festival and won the best award, after that he joined SM through street casting as he was preparing for the practical music entrance examination.

His entrance examination’s style was quite different from dancing singers’ ‘way to sing’. Baekhyun expressed the difficulties he had at that time “I had to start and go back to vocalizations” and “Changing the singing style in itself was hard. And when I entered the company, it was the first time I learnt dancing”. But he said that since now he was able to dance and sing on stage, and communicate with the fans up close, he was happier than anyone else. Baekhyun said “When I hear the cheers, I get goosebumps all over my body and even forget how tired I am”.

Chanyeol

Chanyeol (Real name: Park Chanyeol) appeared once during high school in SNSD’s Japanese MV ‘Genie’, he’s born in 1992. Chanyeol, who liked music ever since elementary school, fell for drums when he watched the movie <School Of Rock>. Using this skill as his basis, he formed a band and performed. At 16 years old he entered an acting private institute and as he was preparing, he entered SM Entertainment during high school.

The members of the band he was playing with during high school have all dispersed. Chanyeol said while smiling “During school, I was waiting only for festivals or competitions but now that I receive applause and interest each time I get on all these stages, I’m happy and enjoying it every day”. Chanyeol added “My dream of becoming an idol was only in my heart but I was able to challenge it as I sought for my opportunity” and “I’m tall and my body isn’t flexible either so learning to dance was the hardest of all the things’. His father who had once dreamt of becoming a singer is now Chanyeol’s reliable supporter.

I was born on January 14, 1994. I have two older sisters who are respectly five and nine years older than me.

By nature, when I’m at home, I’m quite chic and don’t talk a lot. That’s why when they saw me on TV, my sisters told me “It’s the first time I see you this happy” and “Why aren’t you like this when you’re with me?”. I kind of… felt sorry. I miss my mom, my dad and my sisters!

I am the only EXO-K member to have a bronzed skin color. Also… my lips are thick and I have double eyelids. Haha.

When I was young, my parents sent me to a private institude to learn Taekwondo and how to play the piano many times but I couldn’t even endure it for a day and got tired of them. However when I started learning jazz dance by chance, might it snow or rain I would always ask my dad to take me to the institute. I fell for ballet and started learning it in fourth grade after watching “The Nutcracker”.

Among our members, the most handsome one is Sehun. I don’t gain weight. Usually when the other members want to gain weight, they would manage the way they eat but it has never happened to me nor Kai hyung. (Chanyeol : I don’t gain much weight either. / D.O: All the members except for me just eat.). D.O is quite thourough about self-regulation.

Kai hyung says i am scary when i pretend to talk to myself and speak to him informally. (D.O: Isn’t it one of your cute charms?). He says I do it on purpose but we all end up joking about it. A rookie group of a larger scale named EXO made their debut with the hopes of achieving their dreams while simultaneously conquering the Korean and Chinese music markets. While EXO is comprised of 12 total members, six promote in Korea under the name EXO-K while EXO-M promotes in China. As it is a concept not yet attempted before, all eyes are on their promotions.

Leader Suho kicked off the interview by introducing the meaning behind EXO, where he expressed, “EXO is derived from EXO Planet, and I feel that it’s a name that matches us well. We want to show the entire world what EXO’s all about. It’s only been about three weeks since we came to Earth, but I think we’ve been adjusting very well (laughter).”

Prior to their debut, EXO released promotional teaser videos for about 100 days before marking their debut with a showcase at the end of May. After seeing what the boys were finally all about on stage, the reaction from new fans were ecstatic. The members revealed that they still hold those feelings to heart.

Kai reminisced, “About five seconds before we were to begin our stage, I felt as if my heart would explode. I felt nervous, but listening to the screams of our fans was electrifying. It’s a feeling that can’t be put into words. Once we began our choreography with the music, I thought to myself, ‘So this is why I became a singer. I’d have no regrets dying on stage.”

D.O. stated, “We’re three weeks into our promotions now, and there’s nothing that’s particularly difficult about it. I’m just glad to be able to stand on stage. Everything’s fun because it’s been something we’ve been dreaming about for so long. I think I get super saiyan strength on stage.”

The other members agreed that it was difficult to express those feelings with just words like “jjang” and “daebak” but felt that those came closest.

The members of EXO-K actually received attention even before their debut just for the reason of being an SM trainee.

Chanyeol revealed, “Just the title of beingbranded an SM trainee itself was really pressuring. Our seniors did so well that it was a burden to think that we had to follow their foot steps. Our biggest worry was tainting the path they had paved.”

Suho added, “We’re always trying to aim for perfection because of the anticipation everyone has for us. We’re confident, and we promise to hold a color all our own with music that sets us apart from other idol groups. We want people to be able to immediately think, ‘Oh, this music was sung by EXO-K.’”

Although EXO-K debuted amidst much spotlight and attention, behind the glitz and glam are realistic, down to earth boys. Suho expressed, “We want to become a group that not only receives love from our fans, but knows how to share and return to the love. We haven’t been able to participate in volunteer work since our debut, but we want to do it consistently as well since we’ve been doing it for a while. Although small, we want to get things in action.”

Since their trainee days, EXO-K has been volunteering at local senior homes and schools for the deaf by cleaning and even learning sign language to play with the children. To the grandmas, grandpas, and the children that hung out with them, EXO-K isn’t an idol group but a group of respectable young men and amazing oppas. They may be EXO-K on stage, but off, they’re just your next door teens, a double life that they indeed enjoy.

My name is Chanyeol. My real name is Park Chanyeol.

I was born on January 11, 1992.  I have a big sister who’s three years older than me.

Before I had my debut, when she was searching on Internet, my sister told me this “Ya, your old pictures are all here! I didn’t even know these”. These days, my sister doesn’t talk much about it but I think she’s really proud of me.

I’m exactly 185cm tall. Seeing how I didn’t grow for 2 years, now I’m pretty sure it stopped. And when I compare with others, my ears stick out a lot and my eyes are rather big. My teeth are also very even. It’s the national good teeth. Hahaha.

That’s why the fans gave me the nickname ‘Teeth Rich’. A while ago during a fansign, some fan gave me a little doll with eyes on its teeth. Because she seemed to have a lot of interest in me, I was surprised and really happy.

Out of EXO-K and EXO-M’s 12 members, my teaser came out the latest. It came out but because it was took so much time, my mother often told me “When is yours coming out? You’re the only one taking forever” when we were on the phone. My friends also said “Why isn’t yours coming? Didn’t you get kicked out of the team?”. Truthfully… I was also a bit nervous. Haha. 

I started being a trainee at SM during my first year of high school. As the news spread out in the school, when I was passing by in the hallway, they would look at me curiously or, ah right, they also came in my classroom to take a look. I always had a lively personality but because it made me a bit embarrassed, I just sat still.

During middle school, I made with my really close friends a band called ‘Heavy Noise’. Back then I really liked Green Day, Nirvana, X-Japan, etc. During highschool, I entered the school’s band, it was called ‘Seiren’, I totally fell for Muse.

When we first practiced ‘MAMA”s choreography, I thought I was going to be the black hole. Euhaha. I thought ‘I’m in a big trouble’ but I practiced all night alone with Kai or Sehun, they taught me precisely the moves one by one so it was really a relief.

My superpower is being able to control fire. The phoenix summon…. doesn’t really work well on Earth. (Kai: Because the magic power is kind of weak here…) When we’ll promote for our next album, I think it’ll be really nice if I shoot fire for real.

I was born on May 6, 1992. I have a seven-years older big brother. There’s a big age difference but we don’t have any problems about it. Ever since I was young, we were close, we were even shopping together.

I draw my eyeliner the thickest in EXO-K. Compared to the other members who look sharp, I look more round and my eyes are a bit small too. Ah, I’m forever getting effeminate. Hahaha. When I draw my eyeline, I think it makes me more good-looking but I got used to seeing my eyes without eyeliner.

I also got a know-how when I erase my eyeliner. You put eye makeup remover on a tissue, you put it still on your eyes so the makeup melts, then you can just wipe it off at once with cotton. At first it was hard since I couldn’t open my eyes but now I’m good at it. Before doing my debut, I couldn’t imagine I’d use makeup in my life…. Now I understand why women put on makeup. Hehe.

I joined the team the latest. The first one I got close to was Chanyeol who’s the same age as me. Because we were living in the same direction, we would take the subway and go home together after practicing, we had a lot of time to talk. It turned out that he was also my friend’s friend.

During high school, I was the mood maker. I think I mainly danced a lot to Rain senior and SHINee seniors’ dances. I thought I was doing my best dancing, but my friends thought it was really funny to see. (Kai: He showed it to us when we were trainees too, it’s really awesome. He must’ve been very popular. I prepared a lot of imitations to show on variety programs. I can do Gibong, I can also imitate Oh Gwangrok. I can’t imitate the way my company’s seniors sing yet though. 

Since they always see me face to face, I don’t know what would happen if I imitated them…. haha.
